This week Jesus addresses the religious leaders themselves as He pronounced woes upon them for leading His people astray. As we dive into this chapter, we will see not only the harsh judgment Jesus expressed against the scribes and Pharisees, but also His tender emotion and grief over their rejection of their Messiah.

Our reading for this week: Matthew 23.

Questions 1-7 are taken from David Platt's commentary on Matthew.

Questions to Ponder:

1. Even for unbelievers, hypocrisy is despised. Why do you think this is? Define hypocrisy.

2. Why is it not enough simply to be sincere in what you believe? How does this passage serve as a warning in this regard?

3. What is the difference between strong Biblical leadership and leadership that is self-promoting? How might these principles apply to Christians who aren't spiritual leaders?

4. What other sins does pride lead to? How can you fight against a proud heart? Can you think of any relevant Biblical passages?

5. If purity begins in the heart, then what should our fight against sin look like?

6. In what ways do you see yourself in Jesus' indictment of the Pharisees? Be specific.

7. How can we be diligent about holiness without being overly introspective and without expecting perfection?

8. At the end of this chapter, Jesus talks about longing to gather the children of Jerusalem under His wings like a hen would her chicks. Has there been a time when you experienced God as your refuge?

9. What have you learned from this lesson that could make you a better leader? (All of us are leaders somewhere - home, workplace, volunteer work, etc.)
