Read Jonah chapter 4
As you read this passage, look for facts.
What are the people doing that they should be doing?
What are the people doing that they shouldn't be doing?
Is there a command to follow? A promise to claim?
A warning to heed? An example to follow?
What does this passage show us about who God is?
Questions to Ponder:
1. I left you last week with this question -
What's one area in life where you're hoping for a fresh start? How can you move forward in faith towards healing?
2. How does Jonah respond to God's mercy to Ninevah? How does this compare to his response to God's mercy to him in chapter 2? What does the difference between Jonah's two responses show us about his heart?
3. Last time Jonah disobeyed God this blatantly, he ended up in a ferociously wild sea in danger of losing his life. This time he's so furious he asks the Lord to take away his life (v.3)
4. How might we expect God to respond to Jonah? How does God respond? What does this remind us about what God is like?
5. Do you ever want God to be different or do things differently than He does? Our God does not change, nor should He! He is holy and perfect. When we're out of step with God, WE are always the ones who need to change.
6 .Jonah leaves Ninevah and waits at a safe distance "to see what would happen to the city" (v.5). What might Jonah be hoping for?
7. In this last chapter, what things make Jonah very angry? What things make him very happy? What does this show us about Jonah?
8. What are the signs that we share God's priorities? What are the signs that a congregation shares God's priorities?
9. We don't get to hear Jonah's answer to God's final question. Why do you think the book of Jonah ends with this unanswered question left hanging?
10. What's the good news about God in this passage?
