In honor of the 250th anniversary of the writing of "Amazing Grace," we are spending this Lent focusing on God's Amazing Grace!

The penitent thief received amazing grace when Jesus promised him on Good Friday that he would be with the Lord in paradise that very day. That promise of paradise extends to us through the cross.

Our readings for this week: Isaiah 53: 7-12; Hebrews 2: 14-18; Luke 23: 39-43.

Questions to Ponder:

1. This is a question we will continue to discuss using this sermon series:

How would you define the amazing grace of God?

2. If you knew you only had a few more minutes, maybe hours to live, what would you want? What would be most important to you?

3. Why do so many people fear death? Why should death NOT be fearful for Christians?

4. Why do you think one of the criminals on the cross insulted and mocked Jesus? What human trait prompted him to do this? (Luke 23: 39)

5. The penitent thief on the cross said to the other thief, "And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds." When have you been caught red-handed? What did you say or do?

6. Why does the thief trust Jesus Christ? Even in this hour of death, he is there with us, to set us free, and to give us the very innocence that he himself has to give. How does it feel to know Christ died for YOUR sins?

7. How do you think the thief's request makes Jesus feel?

8. The thief says to Jesus, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." What does it mean for Jesus to remember you? Do you trust Jesus will remember you?

9. What lessons are we disciples supposed to learn from this strange exchange between Jesus and the thief? What does Jesus intend us to get out of this?

10. How do you see God's amazing grace in this scene from Luke's Gospel?
