As familiar as we are with the songs of Christmas, there are four songs recorded in the Bible sung by people surrounding the birth of Jesus that aren't sung much at all now. Zechariah's song came after a time of silence. The angels sang a song to the shepherds (we know part of their song: "And on earth peace and goodwill toward men.")..Simeon had a song  that we'll talk about next week.

This week we hear Mary's song. Mary sang a song to God after she had time to get over the shocking news that she was going to be the mother of the Savior.

Our readings for this week: Isaiah 35: 1-10; Luke 1:46-56.

Questions to Ponder:

1. When have you made plans that have not turned out the way you thought?

2. When Mary first encountered the angel, the Scripture says, "She was greatly troubled." Mary was anxious and afraid of the unknown. When have you experienced a situation you did not expect, want, or plan for? What was your first reaction?

3. Mary moved from anxiety to acceptance. Mary decided to trust. When times are challenging, are you able to trust God knows what He is doing in your life?

4. Jesus says in John 14:1: "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me." What benefits come from trusting in God?

5. Trusting God goes beyond feelings. Rather it means that you trust in both His character and his promises. What are some of the promises of God you trust in? (One of Pastor Caryn's favorites is Philippians 1:6: "Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."

6. When life is uncertain and the road ahead is unclear, it can be hard to trust in God, let along praise Him! Do you take time to praise God daily? What things help you praise God?

7. Jeremiah 29:11: "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Looking back over your life, when has God made plans that gave you hope and a future?

8. What song is your heart singing this Advent/Christmas season? How can you sing songs of adoration to our King?
