A parable is a simple story that illustrates a profound truth. Did you know that more than a third of Jesus' recorded teaching is in the form of parables? When we study the parables, we hear the voice of Jesus. What is He saying? What is our response?

Through this study, we will grow into a deeper love of the One of whom it was said: "No one ever spoke the way this man does." John 7:46.

One of the thoughts of this short parable, found in Matthew, Mark and Luke is this: a great result from a small beginning, a large growth from a little germ. The parable was intended for the disciples of Jesus, who were discouraged and confused. They believe Jesus was the promised Messiah and were ready for the kingdom revolution. Instead, Jesus encounters stiff and growing opposition from Jewish religious leaders.

Our Scripture readings are Acts 2:42-47; Matthew 13:31-32.

Questions to Ponder:

1. Read Acts 1:15 and Acts 2: 42-47. What was the size of the church in the beginning of the book of Acts? How rapidly did the church grow? How is the growth of the early church like the parable of the mustard seed?

2. Why do you think Jesus didn't say anything about the sower? Who is the unnamed sower? What is our responsibility in advancing the kingdom? How would the parable of the mustard seed encourage a person who is involved in a new ministry or one that is small?

3. How does the ministry of Jesus embody the truth of the parable?

4. Though the parable is about the growth of the kingdom, how would you use this parable to encourage growth in a new Christian? How does this parable encourage your growth?

5. In our present culture, most people want instant results. The Scriptures value patience. How does the parable of the mustard seed encourage patience?

6. How big is a mustard seed? How about the mustard "tree" that grows from it? What does this illustrate to us about the kingdom of God?

7. Pastor Petie Kinder says, "Life with God starts smaller than you'd ever expect but can grow into something bigger than you'd ever imagine. When have you seen God show up or be present in ways that you could not have expected? What did that teach you about your expectations and God's faithfulness?"
