This Lent we are going to study the book of Philippians aka the book of joy. I will be referencing the book Because of This I Rejoice: Reading Philippians During Lent by Max O. Vincent. We will be talking about how to joyfully practice spiritual disciplines: prayer, witness, humility, hospitality, asceticism and giving.

For this week, we will focus on joyful humility. The Spritiual Disciples Handbook says, "Humility is the desire to become like Jesus in His willingness to choose the hidden way of love rather than the way of power. Humility is not thinking less of yourself but thinking of yourself less. Humble people let go of image management and selfpromotion. They honor others by making the others' needs as real and important as their own."

I want to encourage you to read the whole letter of Philillians in one sitting.

For this week, we will be focusing on Mark 16:14-20; Philippians 1:27-2:18.

Plan to join us this Sunday morning at 10:30 am or go to our FB page to link to Youtube live on Sunday mornings or anytime on our website redoakpresbyterianchurch.com

Questions to Ponder:

1. How do you define humility?

2. Max O Vincent says, "Who comes to mind when you hear the word humility? In what ways do they illustrate humility?"

3. Max O Vincent says, "How can a Christian community bear witness to the Gospel? How does our life together share our Christian faith with the world?"

4. How is Christ's humility displayed in the passage from Philippians?

5. How is Jesus' model of leadership different from a worldly view of leadership? How can you put this type of life in practice today?

6. Why should we be overwhelmed by the fact that we Christians know Christ and He knows us?

7. Mac O Vincent says, "What does it mean to you to work out your salvation with fear and trembling?"

8. Philippians 2:3-4 says, "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others."

9. Christ's work was done "to the glory of God the Father". How does this move you? Is your great aim to live a humble, others-oriented life for the glory of the Father, through Jesus? Pray for a deeper desire to live for God's glory by following Christ's example.
