The feasts which God gave to the nation of Israel (and are often called the feasts of Israel) are incredible in their truth about Jesus and for their prophetic revelation concerning God's plan to redeem this planet.

We have studied the first four spring feasts, which Jesus Christ fulfilled by the events of His first coming. While the Passover reminds of our deliverance from death, the Feast of Unleavened Bread reminds us we still face the dangerous and permeating effect of sin. The Feast of Firstfruits celebrates God giving us His very best: Himself. In turn, we are to worship God by giving Him OUR very best. On the Feast of Weeks (Pentecost), the power of the Holy Spirit was given to God's people.

The fall feasts are the ones Jesus will fulfill in His second coming. One day soon, Jesus will fulfill the Feast of Trumpets with His triumphant return. The second Fall Feast is the Day of Atonement. While it's true sin abounds, grace abounds so much more. The Day of Atonement is a day dedicated to showcasing God's elaborate grace.

I encourage you to read: Leviticus 23: 26-32; Isaiah 53: 1-9

Questions to Ponder:

1. Genesis 2:17 says, "but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die." What punishment was promised for Adam and Eve's failure to obey God's command?

2. Sin is more than a mistake. How is sin a violation of God's holiness?

3. The Day of Atonement is a reminder of both the reality of our singulness and the extravagance of God's grace. It was the most sacred day on the Israelite calendar.

Leviticus 16:2 "The LORD said to Moses: 'Tell your brother Aaron that he is not to come whenever he chooses into the Most Holy Place behind the curtain in front of the atonement cover on the ark, or else he will die. For I will appear in the cloud over the atonement cover." One day per year, the high priest would enter the Holy Place within the tabernacle to atone the sins of God's people. What is so sacred about this place?

4. What incredible event does the Day of Atonement point to? (Hint: this event means we don't need a day of atonement yearly!)

5. Ephesians 2:22 says, "And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit." According to this verse, where is the dwelling place of God?

6. How would you define the grace of God?

7. Erin Davis in her book Seven Feasts says, "The sins of your past are covered by grace. The sins of your present are covered by grace. The sins of your future? Yep, they're covered by grace. This is not just any grace. It's sufficient grace!" What does it mean that you are covered by God's grace?
